Why the first paycheck is smaller than expected

Gross pay is the headline number. From it comes federal income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare, any pre-tax benefits like a 401(k) or HSA, and state income tax. What remains is net pay, the amount actually deposited.

Pre-tax versus Roth contributions

Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before income tax, lowering your taxable income today. Roth contributions come out after tax, so they do not lower your current bill, but withdrawals in retirement are tax-free.

Both reduce your take-home pay now. The difference is when you get the tax benefit.

Pay frequency changes the math

A $75,000 salary is $1,442.31 a week, $2,884.62 biweekly, or $6,250 a month. Biweekly pay means 26 checks a year; semimonthly means 24. The annual total is the same, but the rhythm (and the two months with three checks) is not.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my bonus taxed so heavily?

Bonuses are withheld at a flat supplemental rate of 22 percent, with amounts above $1 million at 37 percent. This is withholding, not a special tax. The real liability is settled when you file.

How can I increase my take-home pay?

You cannot lower FICA, but you can lower taxable income through pre-tax contributions, an HSA, or a dependent care FSA. Adjusting your W-4 withholdings helps only if you are currently over-withholding.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly is every two weeks (26 checks a year, with two months containing three). Semimonthly is twice a month (24 checks). The annual total is identical.

Do I pay state tax if I live in one state and work in another?

Usually you pay tax to your state of residence, and your work state may also withhold. Most states offer a credit for tax paid to another state, so you are not double taxed, but you do have to file two returns.
